Sussex photo days general info

I run a variety of Sussex photography workshops and photographic days that are held in lovely places and the aim is always to make them friendly and good fun. Group size is limited to just four people so there’s plenty of time for individual advice. I also run one-on-one days and more info on these can be found here. My system of teaching is to demystify the technical side of photography and hand the creative power to you. Digital cameras have a huge array of buttons and menus which can seem daunting. We’ll bypass the boring part of photography to get you taking photos that you’ll be proud of, whatever camera you’re using. There won’t be long tedious technical ramblings as we’ll achieve this in an intuitive way by actually taking photos together. If you’d like info about me and my work then the about section here has plenty of info.  I’ll put a few photos at the bottom of this page taken on past photography days but first let’s cut to the chase with dates and prices for next available workshops.  There’s a blog post here with a few more photos taken on my Sussex photography days and another one here of recent seacape photos.

“A great day. I learned a lot about my camera in a laid back, relaxed and enjoyable way and surprised myself how good some of my shots were.” Gary Jefferson

“Ian has a way of making photography simple. I learnt what to use and just as importantly what not to use on my new camera. And as for composition, it’s changed the way I look at potential images.” Peter Graham

My small group Sussex photography courses and workshops are limited to a maximum of 4 people so there’s plenty of time for individual advice. During our day, we’ll take a break to have a snack together and look at a few of our photos. This also gives us the opportunity to have a look at an efficient way of dealing with photos along with some post-processing to give your photos that extra edge. I also run one-on-one Sussex photography days which we can tailor to your specific needs – more information on these is here.

Sussex photography course - testimonials

Thanks so much for the feedback from various people who have come on past Sussex photography courses with me.

“I’ve tried a few photography courses and have usually left more confused than when I started. In just one day with you the relation between shutter speed and aperture finally made sense. And your ideas and suggestions on composition have really given my photography a boost. I promise I won’t ever go back to using auto mode now !” Sarah Phillips

“Thanks for a fab day on your Sussex photography course.  I feel confident that I can build on what you taught me today and look forward to putting it all into practice. The morning session on the Riverbank capturing some great shots of water voles was fascinating. We were so lucky with such a perfect day and the Wetland Centre (and all it’s residents) really helped me think about composition. Who would have thought that webbed feet and scaly skin would ever look so good ! Your patience and comprehensive instruction allowed me to quickly gain the confidence I needed to help me make my own choices. Such a great day, I  would thoroughly recommend you.” Debbie Bartlett

“Just wanted to say thank you for Sunday. Thoroughly enjoyed my day with you which was totally inspiring.” Paula Brooks

“I’m really glad I contacted you before going to Iceland. The truth is without this photography day I wouldn’t have been able to capture my memories in the way I have done. I’m really happy to say that all of the photos were taken off auto setting, yay ! You gave me confidence to go out there, try different settings, look out for different photo opportunities, experiment and have fun with my camera. Your uncomplicated instructions were invaluable. I even tried to get shots of birds in flight and used a filter to capture silky smooth waterfalls. I’ve got lots to learn but you’ve inspired me to do so. And I must say I found you as a person and your work inspirational too. So thank you very much.”  Helena

“A great day. I learnt a lot about my camera in a very laid back, relaxed and enjoyable way.  And even surprised myself how good some of my shots were. Can’t believe how much was learnt in just one day; all I need to do now is practice and try to remember everything.” Gary Jefferson

“After a delightful day with Ian, my camera makes sense to me at last. I’m feeling inspired about my photography and I’m now saving up to come and see the orangutans with you!” Susan Roberts

“Thanks so much; we contacted Ian before heading on a trip to Norway as we wanted to improve our landscape shots. The advice on filters and post processing has revolutionised the way we take photos.” Tim and Cathy

“Good company, uncomplicated photography advice and a fine pub lunch !” Lucy Adams

“Photography explained in a fun way … with not a nerd in sight !” Claire Stokes

“Ian has a way of making photography simple. I learnt what to use and just as importantly what not to use on my new camera. And as for composition, it’s changed the way I look at potential images.” Peter Graham

“I wanted to know how to use a new macro lens and booked a one-to-one day with Ian who suggested an insect safari on the South Downs. We covered so much ground and I feel inspired about my photography again.” Jackie

“I’d never taken my camera off the automatic setting before and in just one day I feel I understand so much.” David Murray

“I Just wanted to say what a fabulous day it was on Friday. I have had my camera for a few months but had only been taking pictures in auto-mode. You gave me confidence and explained the relationship between aperture, shutter speeds and ISO numbers in such a simple way.  I finally understand them and how to use them. Thank you for such a inspirational day. ” Hayat Karboub ”

I really enjoyed myself on the landscape photography workshop because we had plenty of time to experiment with the camera settings whilst trying to take varied and interesting photos. Ian came around to each of us in the group individually to offer advice, which was really beneficial as we all came onto the workshop with different knowledge and experience. Plus, it was invaluable to get some feedback later in the day when we reviewed the photos on the computer.” Lisa Saw

” What a great day yesterday. I learned so much and enjoyed every minute. I can’t wait to get out with the camera again but have to cut the grass this afternoon first!” Patricia Pringle

“Thank you so much for a very inspiring and enjoyable day. For me personally I felt I learnt a great deal just being out with my camera and making my own decisions but with your expert and patient help on hand.” Sarah Cooper

“Thank you for a great day on Saturday.  I really enjoyed it and learnt so much and am feeling inspired to do lots more photography now.” Caroline Smithers

“Amazing day with Ian Wood at the Wetlands centre and not a single shot on auto !!!” Margaret Ramsay

” Just wanted to write a couple of lines to say thank you so much for such a great day on Sunday. It was better than we could have imagined and your extremely patient, informative and supportive way has certainly done the trick.  Despite having spent the last year of my life on auto I have ventured out today on my own.  I kept it on manual and am truly excited about heading out next for some more bird life photos. Thanks so much for opening up a whole new lease of life for us and our camera. ” Katharine Woodhouse
